Winter cycling- anatomy of an outfit

I am not doing a whole lot of winter cycling this year, but if you are, you might want to check out the latest issue of Momentum for a host of great articles and tips on winter cycling and winter gear. I just received my Dec. issue in the mail and it’s wonderful! Did you know that you can also read the entire thing online?

Around the blogosphere, I see that winter has hit Endmonton pretty hard already, but Miss Sarah is still out there and riding with her little baby on the way! Go, Miss Sarah!

Chicago’s gotten pretty chilly as well but that doesn’t seem to stop these ladies for cycling (in style!).

Has winter arrived where you are and have you continued riding through it all? If you’ve blogged about your winter bike ride, leave a link in the comments below and add your voice to the mix! Let’s see what winter riding is like for all of you out there!

*And a note on the braids: For long hair, braids seem to me the most helmet and hat friendly. Definitely a winter staple in my hairstyling routine (although, less so now that the locks are about 12 inches shorter than last winter).

The mildness of Chicago’s weather is starting to freak me out. :) The relative warmth continues in the forecast for at least the rest of the week.

Your braids are always so cute. I wear a boring braid a lot and get fancy only when Trisha’s around to do my hair. My braiding skills are pretty bad.

  2. i love a good braid, i think they are so pretty on long hair and keeps your hair out of your face while being helmet-friendly. plus you always look so chic in heidi braids!

  4. We’re such wussbags when it comes to winter cycling! I’m in awe of people who keep going even when it’s snowing. Eek.

Thanks for the birthday love. She had such an unreal day. xx

Thanks for this! It was in the 30s in San Diego today and I was considering driving today but I remembered how cold it is where it really is cold and braved it. So glad I did!

299I am only commenting to make you know of the ufesul experience our girl went through checking your blog. She even learned a good number of issues, which included what it is like to have an excellent teaching mindset to make others smoothly know just exactly a number of multifaceted issues. You really did more than her desires. Many thanks for providing those informative, dependable, informative and in addition unique tips on your topic to Ethel.

I am so chicken when it comes to biking in Winter. For me it isn’t just the cold, it is the darkness on the commute home. I just don’t have confidence that cars will see me, even with my blinkey lights!

  7. I finally dug out my heavy-duty mittens, under-helmet hat, and balaclava. Like you, I am not biking much these days. I ran some bike errands on Saturday, but it was quite mild (now it’s colder), so I didn’t need much of the gear — just regular gloves and the hat to keep my ears warm :)

  8. In Manchester (UK) we’ve had quite a late onset winter but it’s starting to get frosty and icey now. I’ve just been wearing lots of layers and these high-vis glvoes. I don’t think it’s quite cold enough for merino baselayers or a down jacket yet – I don’t want to get to work and be too warm!

  9. (thanks for a great blog, by the way, I’m just digging through the .com version and the older version too)

i’m jealous of all you ladies who can comfortably cycle with coats! i get overheated in even the lightest of wool coats. even in 30F, i’ve been wearing a thermal shirt layered with a cycling rain shell. i miss wearing my cute winter coats.
