two on tuesdays: biking with dexter to a festival

Two on Tuesdays

Two On Tuesdays is a mini-series with the fabulous Miss Sarah of Girls and Bicycles and her adorable son Dexter. Miss Sarah will be checking in every Tuesday this summer with posts on cycling with Dexter and thoughts on retaining that mobile (cycling) lifestyle as a family. And we’re looking forward to hearing more tips and questions from you readers too! Take part in the conversation in the comments section or drop either one of us an email so we can share your own expertise and questions with everybody else in future posts.

Two on Tuesdays

This week’s Two on Tuesdays for Simply Bike features me, Dexter, and Bryce Kulak going to the Fringe Festival! They have a whole area sectioned off just for kids, with kid stages, crafts, games, and story time. We thought Dexter would have a ball, getting out there to one of my favourite Edmonton festivals (there are a lot of them).

Having a baby doesn’t mean needing to enroll them into expensive programs. You can attend a festival for free. And do lots of people watching and fun stuff along the way. Honestly, I think lots of boring things can be turned into an adventure with kids, you just have to have the right attitude.

The bike really helps in this respect. Every time we take it out, Dexter knows he is in for a fun outing! Even if it’s just groceries.

Our dear friend Bryce is visiting from Toronto (he is in town working on a movie-musical with Trevor Anderson). For the past few days he has been riding the Dahon, which is such a great guest bike. Today I suggested he could try the Urbana that has been hanging out at the bungalow.

The height of the saddle was easy to change. The headset needed some attention, since it was wobbly wobbly.

Dexter waited patiently.

Then we were off!

A short ride later we found ourselves at the Fringe Festival grounds.

Just in time for a story.

After stories and some hula hoop action, it was time to reveal the bottle of bubbles we brought.

Dexter would stomp on them once they fell onto the grass.

There are rides at the Fringe this year! I have no clue if it has something to do with the theme for this year’s Fringe (Fringeopolis), or if they’re just going to start doing it every year. Regardless, they are green powered.

Bryce’s favourite ride is the ferris wheel. They ogled.

Then it was time to take a ride!

So much fun!

We were so proud of Dexter. He wasn’t scared or anything, and thought it was great fun. This was his first ferris wheel ride, ever, so it was definitely a highlight.

Back at the library where we locked up our bikes, there were lots of other smart people who decided that riding was way easier that finding parking.

Two on Tuesdays

Dexter did not want to go home. He tried to hide from me, behind a bunch of other bikes.

One of the funnest things to do with Dexter is just going out and enjoying the treats that our city has to offer. Sometimes it’s wading at the Legislature or City Hall (we take the train). Sometimes it’s going around the neighbourhood to walk the dog via bike. Sometimes it’s just the farmer’s market.

All of these things cost little to no money, and don’t require any huge itinerary. It doesn’t matter if I’m late. We can choose to buy things or not. And really, the bike ride itself is a pretty fun element of the whole outing. In this way, looking after Dexter never feels like a chore. We’re always having fun!

Life with a baby doesn’t always have to be a grind. Using fun alternative transportation always results in unexpected fun. Like how we ran into Leanne on the way home, or when we have conversations about the bucket bike with strangers. No muss, no fuss.

Lots of cardio.

I *love* biking with my boys in the trailer, but, two questions: the WEIGHT. Oh my goodness, the weight up hills of two boys plus a two-boy trailer and a 90 degree hill (only slight exaggeration)…HOW? Just how? Also, since you only have one kiddo, you may not know the answer, but my kids punch each other in the back of the trailer, and there is no way to stop it before one kid gets hurt. It’s stopped us from most outings. Any suggestions besides strait jackets?
