I think I’m going to start a Friday countdown through my last weeks of cycling while pregnant. I’m kind of curious to see for how long I can keep going and how ridiculously big I will still get while still being able to ride a bike. So far, I can’t complain. While my weekly and daily mileage has definitely decreased over the past months, I’m still able to ride my bike for select trips, even if it’s not for every trip out of the house.

This week I biked to my prenatal yoga class on Wednesday evening, something I wasn’t sure that I would still be able to do. My yoga center is a good 4.5 miles away and most of my bike trips have been around 5 miles total for a given day. But the weather was wonderful and a friend of mine contacted me about going on a bike ride together, so I decided to venture out and combine meeting her with going to yoga. My friend just had a baby not too long ago and I was thrilled and inspired to see her wanting to get back on a bike already. (Good inspiration for when I’m there, so thank you, K. if you’re reading this!) We met up at a half way point between our houses, biked to a nearby café for outdoor seating and a quick bite to eat, and then I set out for my yoga class while she biked back to her house and baby.

Because I had breaks in between the miles biked – dinner, yoga – it wasn’t that much to cover all that distance and I was thrilled to see that I done a whole 10.3 mile round trip by the time I arrived home. I felt great and the bike ride home in the setting evening sun was pure enjoyment. Yoga helped me relax and stretch out all those muscles that tighten while walking and cycling and I arrived home feeling happy and a really good sort of tired.

I can’t pull off ten mile rides on a daily basis at this point, and I’m sure that the day will come when the round trip to the yoga center and home will be more than my body can handle. But for every week that passes and I’m still riding my bike, walking my dog, stretching at yoga, or engaging in any sort of physical activity, I’m content and thankful.

Bonus perk: at my midwife appointment on Tuesday, my midwife asked about what kind of physical activity I was doing and said that staying this fit and active will likely help me have a labor and delivery that would fall on the ‘easier’ side of the spectrum. (As much as one can classify giving birth as ‘easy’). I would really like to have a natural and drug free birth and I’m hopeful that all this excercise during pregnancy will pay off come labor. So that’s where I am at 32 weeks pregnant and what cycling at 32 weeks looks like for me. Did you bike during your pregnancy? Where you able to continue to the last week before giving birth?     I cycled to the supermarket in the morning and just before midnight on that same day I gave birth to my little girl (seven years ago in September). I rode my bike throughout my second pregnancy, not only short distances, I walked a lot, and I definitely had an easy labour & delivery (yes, you can classify it as such!). With my firstborn, ten years ago next Wednesday, I had to have an emergency C-section because I wasn’t fit enough (strike that – I wasn’t fit at all), and I was enormously overweight (I lost quite a lot of weight after I had my boy). I’m speaking from my own experience – physical exercise definitely contributes to easier labour. So keep on cycling!

    At 28 weeks :) I always feel better on the days I’m active. I am still doing pre-natal yoga once a week, biking (both on the dirt roads around my house and on my trainer) when I can, walking/hiking, swimming…whatever I can find time for! The only activity I really gave up from the first trimester was running. Our roads were too icy, snowy or muddy for months for me to feel stable. I cut back on climbing since my harness started to get a little small for the belly. With a new alpine harness that fits around, I’ll be out on the slabs in NY on Monday for some super easy climbs. Like you, my midwives and I talk about my activity choices at every appointment. I would never do anything to jeopardize the little one. She seems to be happiest on the days we get to play.

    I didn’t bike ride, but I walked a lot and did yoga with both my pregnancies, and I had “easy”, drug-free deliveries both times. I forget, are you taking childbirth classes? We did Bradley Method, which was almost too touchy-feely for me, but I used the parts of the method I was comfortable with and discarded the rest. My mindset was that I would use the drugs if I really was in agony, but truly, I never felt like I needed them. Giving birth was succumbing to a force of nature! For me, the part that hurt the worst was the baby crowning, but when that happened, I knew it was almost over. I hope you have an amazing birth experience!!

    I’m so inspired by your biking and yoga while pregnant, and so glad that people like you prove that pregnant women are not invalids. Plus you look super cute in your yoga outfit! 10 miles is quite a trip – I don’t think I’ve ridden my bike more than five or six miles in a day lately. I need to get a longer ride in soon.

    I’m not preggers (nor have I ever been), but you are definitely inspiring me to get back on my bike more after this marathon is behind me on Sunday! You look fit and healthy and absolutely adorable in your yoga outfit to boot!

    I’m at 23 weeks and still riding my bike as much as I’m able, thanks in large part your inspiration and example! (And with approval from my doctor.) My plan is just to listen to my body and keep riding as long as I feel comfortable – I already have toned things back and don’t push myself like I used to. Giving birth is going to be the most challenging physical thing I’ve ever done, so it definitely makes sense to stay as fit as possible.

    Hi S – I had miserable pregnancies and didn’t do any formal exercise during them, but I was lucky enough to have a natural hospital delivery for my first and a home birth for my second. I’m so pleased that you are looking after yourself so well and looking so fabulous and are getting closer and closer to meeting your baby face to face . . ! (I’m super-excited for you! Can’t wait!)

  10. You’re such an inspiration! I spent this past weekend at the American College of Sports Medicine conference and asked an exercise and pregnancy expert about guidelines, etc… From what he said, you’re basically an OB’s dream :) Can’t wait to see pics in the coming weeks!
