It’s back on! This week I’ve been back on the bike and commuting to work! I can’t even tell you how good it feels to just hop on my bike and ten minutes later be parked outside of my office. While we were snowed in and temperatures hovered around 0 F, I caught rides with my husband on his way to work. Although I loved sharing those extra few minutes in the car with him, I’m realizing how much I love to leave the house and my office when I want to and to enjoy the sensation of summer, fall, winter (whatever season it happens to be) for that short commute to work and home.
I also forgot how much quicker cycling is than walking! On a few ‘warmer’ days, when the temperatures were more bearable but the roads still uncleared, I walked to campus and home. Cycling that distance takes me exactly 1/3 of the time. Ten minutes by bike versus 30 minutes on foot. And I get to dump my bag with laptop, books, lunch stuff, camera, and students’ quizzes in that bright pink crate rather than carry it all on my shoulders.
I could go on and on about how much I love cycling and how excited I am to finally be able to bike to work again, but I think you get my point. And I clearly wasn’t the only one enjoying this sudden surge in temperatures – a whopping 29F yesterday! – as all the other bikes parked outside the library on campus can attest. Could this be a sign that the worst of winter is behind us? I sure hope so! Happy riding to you, where ever you are! ~ S.

This makes me miss the Midwest SO. MUCH. Here in NYC people freak out when it’s 25 degrees in January. In the Midwest that’s almost cause for a picnic! :)
I’m already planning the errands I”ll run by bike this Friday and Saturday (highs of 40 degrees here). We’re still waiting on some ice/snow pack to melt on our side streets, but it should be good to go by Friday!
Ten minutes? Wow.. just a nice little distance to get to your work.
So happy to hear you are back on the bike. I can’t even imagine what those temperatures feel like! It’s a good thing you are so close to your work :-)

I love that blue sky, and I hope you are right that spring may soon be here!
so glad we don’t have freezing temperatures in the bay area. makes me so happy to see you happy about being on the saddle again. ride on girl!
I’m happy that you’re able to get back out there. Sometimes a forced break is good, to get us refreshed and extra thankful for bicycling.
